Dichos are traditional quotes, proverbs, and wise words popularly known and used in the Hispanic culture.  They serve as a means of getting to the point in an indirect way while adding a subtle layer of sarcasm. Some dichos are used to imply a lesson to be learned others serve as words of caution.  Dichos are popularly used in older Hispanic generations although younger generations have embraced their use.  I believe that this is attributed to looking to our past culture and history, looking to keep it alive and well.

I enjoy the use of dichos and the message they imply. My Mother knows just about everyone out there and you will never one up her. Dichos also add a sense of comfort when distress is abounding.  One of my favorite ones is “No Hay Mal que Dura Cien Anos, Ni Cuerpo que lo resiste”.  Its direct translation is “Nothing that is bad Can Last a Hundred Years, and Neither Can a Body Endure a Hundred Bad Years” but its underlying meaning is that whatever is going on that is bad in your life right now, it will not last forever. The message is for you to keep your chin up, it will get better but it is implied in a humorous macabre way.

One that resonates with many as we travel through tough times, “Dios Aprieta, Pero no Ahorca”  It is a way of saying that yes sometimes things get tough but God never forgets us, hang in there!

I am very happy and blessed to be able to share a little tidbit of my culture and I hope it resonates with you too!  If you like the Dichos art stop by my Etsy store here to download make! Keep it Crafty!
