Wandering the Franklins

March 25, 2019

El Paso is a desert. But a very entertaining desert at that. Especially if you are into Mountain Biking and hiking for the matter! We have many veins of trails that run through our mountains in all different types of levels and adventures. We have nice easy going trails, we have the quick descend you better hold on to those handlebars trails and nice winding trails. We are almost surrounded in mountains so we have trails to the north, west, and central.

The view from Transmountain on the West Side of El Paso

My favorite trails are found in the North East. These trails will go on for miles and if you know your way around you can find a way to get to the West side of town following them.

You can take it easy depending on your level of skill or go all out crazy. My husband has a Specialized Stumpjumper which he upgraded the wheels to 29″ because he likes to fly over everything. He is an aggressive rider, I think this is derived from his background with dirtbikes. I ride a Specialized Turbo Levo and that think can go everywhere. It is a toughbike as I have all terrained through everywhere and I can do a more through review for anyone looking to invest in one. For me it was totally worth it! As I said my husband is a crazy fast rider and I would give it all I got but I still struggled to keep up and it was not fun. It was a total game changer and well built.

The scenery is epic and if you enjoy a challenge I would definitely take our trails on. Hands down you will need lots of water which seems like a no brainer but many novices might think that the trails will not be that long.

The view before hitting Sotol Forest

Every so often when you ride the trails in the Northeast the land is part of the Bowen Ranch. Out in the trails we have seen the occasional snake and deer. And every so often you will encounter one of these guys!

If you live in El Paso or close by I hope you come and check out the trails. If you are stopping by for a visit and have no mountain bike you can also rent one from the local bike shops! Happy Trails!
