The Perfect Crafting Desk

March 4, 2020

Have you been searching for the perfect sized craft desk without breaking your budget?  My goal was to find a large crafting desk at the perfect price so that I can spread out. My search started with lots of hope and then nothing. Especially with the $300 budget I had.  Any large crafting desk I could find was over $800 dollars and I could not see it in person.  Not knowing the quality of what I am ordering drives me crazy especially having to pay so much.

For my birthday last year my husband bought me a nice computer desk so that I can begin tackling this mission to craft my way.  The desk was very good quality and had adjustable shelves so that I could fit my crafting supplies in.  It is the “Morvan White Office Desk from Conn’s Furniture”. It was amazing but, I always ran into the same problem.  Never having enough space.

Original Desk..so little space

I felt guilty because he had spent a lot of money to surprise me and I was already looking to replace it but I could no longer adapt to the limited space.  Every time I would transition from my designing materials to my crafting setup, I would have to clear everything off to make room. My crafting area is in our tv room that we made.  This room was created with the intention that we would be able to share our computer space and enjoy watching TV spending time together while working on our things. So I needed the specific rectangular shape desk to fit with our design.  I just wanted a MEGA DESK.

I searched Target, Walmart, Office Depot, and even if I found something that was a possible candidate it would come with the price tag of $800 or more.  I tried Craigslist and other venues and I could not find anything that would satisfy me and my budget of $300. Courtesy of my crafting funds thank you very much Mr. Cricut.

I began losing motivation until I realized that I already owned the perfect desk!  I just needed to expand the top and mega desk would be born.  I looked at plywood, melamine board, butcher block to make a larger top.  During my search I came across an unfinished solid core door by the brand, “JELD-WEN” at Lowes for $81.   The cabinets of my old desk were very sturdy so they became excellent candidates to lay my new top on and I kept a part of my husbands original gift.

We secured the top with L brackets to keep everything in place. I am still debating on the top whether I should coat it or find some melamine laminate to cover the door but for the mean time I like the look of bare wood.  With this setup I went from a size 24” x 56” work area to a 36” x 80” work area.

I hope this inspires you to look around and see what you have around the house so that you can invest in your next MEGA CRAFTING DESK.
